Since 1992, the Scituate Food Pantry has assisted over 500 families totaling approximately 1,100 people. Currently, the pantry serves 230+ families who are eligible to receive nutritious food twice a month, which includes fresh/frozen meat/fish, fresh produce, vegetables and fruit as well as non-perishable canned foods of all types. Special attention is paid to those with dietary restrictions and we distribute extra food during the holidays. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, we provide the ingredients for a complete and nutritious traditional dinners, including turkeys!
ABOUT 700 SCITUATE FAMILIES ARE FOOD INSECURE
Food Insecurity is used by the US Department of Agriculture to describe conditions in which the food intake of household members is reduced and their normal eating patterns are disrupted because the household lacks money and other resources for food. The family’s finances is the most obvious reason for food insecurity but other reasons include physical or mental limitations, living alone and lack of transportation. The latest available statistics show that about 10% of families in the Scituate area were food insecure during 2015-2017.
The Scituate Food Pantry has been serving Scituate residents since 1992. It was created by the Scituate Clergy Association as a modest “emergency” food pantry but has been continually expanding the services to reflect the growing number of families in need.
Our all-volunteer staff distributes the food from the space in the rear of Masonic Temple. The pantry works with churches, clubs, schools and individuals throughout the town to bring awareness of the issue of hunger in our community.
The Pantry’s success in addressing food insecurity is directly related to its all-volunteer team and the incredible support of Scituate residents.
